Professor Hans-Joachim Freund from Fritz-Haber Institute in Germany visited SINANO

Author:LING Xiaolun Update time:May 20, 2019

Prof. Hans-Joachim Freund, former director of Fritz-Haber Institute of Max Planck Society of Germany and the winner of CAS President’s International Fellowship for Distinguished Scientists, visited SINANO on May 10th to 14th, 2019 as the invitation of the Vacuum Interconnected Nanotech Workstation. And he gave an academic report with the title of “Can single crystal model catalyst based on thin oxide films tell by about real powder catalysts?" on the morning of the 13th. The report was hosted by Prof. CUI Yi, and Prof. YANG Hui, director of SINANO, some teachers and students from related fields attended the academic conference.
The understanding of catalysis, especially heterogeneous catalysis, is mainly from the study of model catalytic systems. In recent years, research about single metal crystal and metal oxide model catalysts has caused widespread concern in the field of surface science. It enables researchers to understand the physical and chemical processes of catalytic reaction at nanoscale, and apply them into real catalysis. Prof. Freund elaborated his research and understanding on the basic scientific problems in model catalytic process by using surface science methods from three aspects: Strong Metal Support Interaction (SMSI), Active sites at the oxide-metal interface and two-dimensional silica / confined space, which involved the effect of particle size and structure, modification of the carrier and the environment ( ultra-vacuum or environmental conditions) on reaction. Their research presents a complex reaction process at the atomic scale, making a significant contribution to understanding the essence of the catalytic process.
During the visit, Prof. Freund also visited the Vacuum Interconnected Nanotech Workstation and had a discussion with the teachers and students of energy catalysis research. They had a good discussion on the development of the foreword in related fields.
Personal introduction: Hans-Joachim Freund is a scientific member and director at the Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft in Berlin where he is head of the Department of Chemical Physics. The department is dedicated to the study of model catalysts, applying a large number of techniques and instruments, some of which were newly developed within the department to investigate oxide surfaces and oxide metal interfaces. He serves as Adjunct Professor at five universities in Germany and UK. He received awards in Europe, the US, and Asia. He is a member of six Academies including the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and holds three honorary Doctorates. He received the Gaede-Langmuir Award of the American Vacuum Society and is the recipient of the 2015 Michel Boudart for the Advancement of Catalysis by the North American Catalysis Society and the European Federation of Catalysis Societies. He is Fellow of the American Physical Society and has published more than 815 scientific papers with more than 45.000 citations and given about 770 invited talks. He has held a number of named lectureships around the world. He has educated more than 130 PhD students and collaborated with more than 80 postdoctoral associates.
