On October 26th, Prof. D. F. Williams, the CAS Visiting Professorship for Senior International Scientists, was invited to Suzhou Institute of Nano-Tech and Nano-Bionics (SINANO) for Suzhou Nanomedicine Top Talk and presented an academic talk entitled “Towards A Unified Framework of Biocompatipility Pathways”. The presentation was hosted by Prof. Liwen CHEN, the deputy director of SINANO.

In his talk, Prof. Williams updated the conceptions of biomaterials and biocompatibility, with the development of medical technique and biomaterials. He recognized that the modern conceptions contain more extensive connotation and extension than the traditional ones. He defined biomaterials and biocompatibility as follows: “A biomaterial is a substance that has been engineered to take a form which, alone or as a part of a complex system, is used to direct, by control of interactions with components of living systems, the course of any therapeutic or diagnostic procedure, in human or veterinary medicine.” and “Biocompatibility refers to the ability of a biomaterial to perform its desired function with respect to a medical therapy. Without eliciting any undesired local or systemic effects in the recipient or beneficiary of that therapy, but generating the most appropriate beneficial cellular or tissue response in that specific situation, and optimizing the clinically relevant performance of that therapy”.

After the talk, Prof. Williams had a lively discussion with faculty and students and had a tour of SINANO’s Nanofabrication Platform. During his visit, Prof. Williams also had an academic discussion with researchers of Nanomedicine Division.

Prof. Williams is the Editor-in-Chief of the world-leading journal Biomaterials, and hold an international reputation in the field of biological materials, biocompatibility, regenerative medicine.
