Academic Report VCSELs for Optical Interconnect in Data Center

SpeakerDr.Anjin Liu

HosterProf. Qin Chen

Time: Tuesday 10:00 a.m., 11th Nov.

Place: A320 SINANO

Biography:

Anjin Liu is an Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Technical University of Berlin, Germany. He received Bachelor degree in electronics of science and technology in 2006 from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, and Ph.D. degree in physical electronics from Institute of Semiconductors, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Beijing, in 2011. From 2006 to 2011, he was involved in the research on single-mode vertical cavity surface emitting lasers with surface microstructures for his Ph.D. degree. From 2012 to July, 2013, he was a Postdoc Fellow in Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin, and worked on polymer OEIC for wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON). In August of 2013, he joined the group of Prof. Dieter Bimberg in Technical University of Berlin, and works on high-speed surface emitters for the data center. His research interests include modeling, fabricating, and characterizing passive and active photonic devices and photonic integration. He has authored or coauthored more than 40 papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings, holds 11 issued Chinese patents, and as the first inventor has submitted 1 US patent application. He was the recipients of ZhuLiYueHua Outstanding Ph.D. Candidate Scholarship, CAS (2010), Special Prize of President Scholarship for Postgraduate Students, CAS (2011), Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award, CAS (2012), Fraunhofer scholarship, Germany (2012), and Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, Germany (2012).

Abstract:

The intensive Internet and cloud computing applications demand increasing bandwidth in the data center. Copper-based interconnect is limited by the bandwidth and loss, and is very bulky. Optical interconnect is featured with high bandwidth, low loss, high energy efficiency, and high density, and has been attracting intensive attention. Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are the key components in low-cost, low-powerhigh-speed transceivers used in the data center. In this talk, I will present our recent results of high-speed VCSELs for optical interconnect, and our finding in high-contrast grating design for novel high-speed VCSELs and its new application in integrated optical sensors.
