Abstract:
In this lecture, He shall start by introducing the structural aspect of surface physics, including surface relaxation and reconstruction, reciprocal-space representation and the experimental evaluation of surface structures by electron diffraction techniques. It is then followed by a brief account on surface electronic states, intrinsic and extrinsic, and their effects on Fermi level pinning, band bending, band offset at heterojunction, etc. The lecture will end by a description of the (angle-resolved) photoemission spectroscopy technique, by which such important properties as the work function, band offset and electronic dispersion relation are determined.
