Abstract: Metal-clad nanolasers have recently become excellent candidates for light sources in densely-packed chip-scale photonic circuits, due to their electromagnetic isolation from surrounding components, improved emission efficiency and enhanced cavity-emitter interactions. In this talk, I will discuss the theory, design, fabrication, and characterization of semiconductor metal-clad nanolasers.

Bio:

Dr. Qing Gu is a postdoctoral researcher in the Ultrafast & Nanoscale Optics Group at the University of California, San Diego. She received the Bachelor of Applied Science degree from the University of British Columbia, Canada in 2008, and the Ph.D degree from the University of California, San Diego, in 2014, both in Electrical Engineering. Her research interests include the fabrication and testing of semiconductor nanolasers, device performance co-optimization, solid-state physics and quantum optics, and novel nanoresonator design.  She has held undergraduate researcher positions in the Photonics Research Group at the University of British Columbia and at TRIUMF, Canada’s National Lab for Particle and Nuclear Physics. She is the recipient of the Undergraduate Student Research Award from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and Jacobs Bonus for Excellence Scholarship from the University of California, San Diego. Qing has authored 2 invited papers and is writing a book on semiconductor metal-clad nanolasers.
